The Spyre Center is a New Orleans wellness and healing center located in a former Scandinavian church complex. Meant to be a restorative sanctuary, the transformation from church to wellness center included new wellness space, offices, a courtyard and a new lap pool and deck – all pulling in design elements of its Scandinavian heritage.

The designer needed to ensure an effective drainage solution to prevent any pooling on the paved surfaces – and was hesitant to use small area drains around the pool since they were ineffective. This was a high-profile project located in the Lower Garden District in New Orleans, so the customer also wanted to ensure the channel drain had little visual impact on the finished pool deck.

ELEVATION LIMITATION AN EASY HURDLE

When NDS was brought in to support the project, the team’s biggest hindrance was ensuring positive drainage because of the grade around the pool.

Typical flat drains would not be an ideal solution. In addition, the system had to account for very high flow rates since New Orleans has a high rain intensity.

That’s when NDS turned to its pre-sloped channel drain – Dura Slope – which met all project criteria. Not only is it easy to install and capable of meeting the high sheet flow, but it addressed all the aesthetic criteria as well – as the NDS team recommended the use of its Slot Top grates in stainless steel to match the surrounding area. These grates are designed to blend in very well to hardscape surfaces.

DURA SLOPE MEETS DESIGNER’S NEED FOR EASY TO INSTALL PRODUCT

The designers wanted a product that was low maintenance and easy to install because they had problems in the past with installation errors and breakage. Dura Slope features interlocking tongue and groove joints that make it simple to snap together and align, plus it comes in 4 ft. modular sections that are lightweight, unbreakable and easy to manage.

The drains were also clearly marked with part numbers and direction of flow – so they snap together a certain way, making installation virtually error proof.

The designer insisted on using NDS as they knew our team offered local support in case the contractor needed help sourcing product or had installation questions. The project finished on time and on budget, and the Spyre Center has a beautiful pool deck with an almost hidden drain that can manage a significant storm event.

“Dura Slope is a popular option for hardscape surfaces, and the use of slot top grates are increasing as end users seek a channel drain that incorporates into hardscape with minimal visual impact. The combination of the sleek look of the slot top with the ease of installation of HDPE channel drain is an ideal solution where water pooling needs to be prevented.” - Joshua S. NDS
