The city of Greenville designed and built a new administration complex to replace their old, outdated office building. Featuring two five-story towers connected by a bridge, the new complex includes several state-of-the-art interior and exterior design elements. Near the building’s front entrance, the site features a large quad-shaped surface area with a large lawn in front.

The sidewalk leading to the facility was not adequate to accommodate rescue vehicles in the event of an emergency, so landscape architects from the renowned design firm SeamonWhiteside (SW+) designed a grass fire lane using NDS EZ Roll® permeable pavers.

One of the main reasons they wanted to utilize permeable pavers was to avoid the addition of more impermeable surfaces and maintain as large of a green area as possible. So, first and foremost was specifying a stormwater management product that would preserve greenspace, but then also provide a permeable surface that was able to handle heavy emergency vehicles that could approach the building if needed.

PAVERS MEET MULTIPLE CRITERIA

City of Greenville, SC uses NDS EZ Roll Grass Pavers

SW+ has used NDS products with great success and was confident that the pavers were the best fit for the city of Greenville’s administration building.

The firm knew NDS EZ Roll grass pavers offered a number of benefits including the ability to meet the necessary load-bearing capacity. They are engineered with hexagonal cells that give them a compressive strength of 400,000 psi when filled with soil. They also provide excellent permeability, reducing the demands of the area’s drainage system by providing a permeable, drivable surface. The grass pavers are more cost efficient to maintain than alternative options.

Plus, the sod used with the pavers matched the appearance of the fire lane and surrounding landscape and didn’t require any special seed mix.

GREENVILLE KEEPS IT GREEN

NDS EZ Roll pavers come in 4 ft. by 150 ft. segments that simply roll out over the stone base, making installation easy. The contractor scheduled placement in two phases to accommodate the construction timeline – 13 rolls for the first phase and 4 for the second – for a total of 10,800 sq. ft.

NDS worked with local supplier Seacoast Supply to coordinate the installation schedule and deliver the needed materials directly to the job site, eliminating extra handling and coordination. NDS manufacturers the pavers in the Atlanta area so large quantities of product were readily available for local distribution – helping make it easy to meet the specified timeline for each phase. This also eliminated the need to stage materials onsite as the pavers were ready to deliver on a just-in-time basis, which kept the job site organized and ensured installation went smoothly.
