CASE STUDY: SLOPED CHANNEL DRAINS CONTROL, DIVERT RAINFALL AWAY FROM APARTMENTS
NDS DURA SLOPE CHANNEL DRAINS REDIRECT STORMWATER AWAY FROM CITY APARTMENT COMPLEX
Mildred Street is an apartment complex located in the heart of San Diego that was in need of a water management remedy. The ideal solution would need to be capable of capturing rain fall that was accumulating from a slope just to the east of one of its buildings. However, the units are close together so it was important for NDS to not only come up with a solution that would help for this application but be easy to transport by foot since space was an issue.
PRODUCT’S BUILT-IN SLOPE KEY TO DESIGN SUCCESS
The NDS DesignWorx team quickly went to work to determine the best approach for capturing and conveying the flow of stormwater toward the north, away from the building’s foundation. The remedy was to implement a channel drain since it’s ideal for sheet flow, especially in a constrained area. Thanks to the design versatility of NDS Dura Slope channel drains, the system quickly became the go-to solution for easy specifying. Dura Slope is configured with a built-in slope, which allowed the team to ensure positive stormwater drainage in the desired direction. It’s a durable product, yet deceptively lighter weight since it comes in 4' channels, which enabled the construction team to easily carry the product by foot and navigate the area.
An additional benefit is that Dura Slope is supplied with temporary blank grates for the concrete pour, which eliminates the need for additional labor onsite – such as cutting plywood or extensive grate taping. For this project, a concrete pump was used to encase the Dura Slope channel drain. The contractor appreciated the rebar clips molded right into the product’s design and the blank grate inserts, which made installation much easier and quicker than other products on the market.
NDS DESIGN SERVICES LIGHTENS WORKLOAD FOR SPECIFIER
The DesignWorx team provided the specifier with important design specifications to compliment the final plans, as well as built a comprehensive design layout and parts list. This service ultimately helped streamline the job – ensuring the right product was utilized and reducing the possibility of errors. In addition, distribution of product to the site was seamless and installation went as scheduled without any delay.
