As part of Target Corporation’s strategy to enhance the company’s fulfillment capabilities, a number of sortation centers were set to open in late 2021, including a warehouse in Austin, TX. The location, however, had an area in the back of the building where large amounts of water would accumulate from the surrounding lots. With the site scheduled to be utilized as a distribution center, a new drainage solution that could hold up to very heavy traffic was needed.

Design firm Bowman Engineering wanted to design a system that could handle the volume of a 100-year storm intensity required by the city of Austin and were trying to determine the best course of action. After participating in two informational sessions with an NDS spec manager, Bowman learned that NDS could provide support with its Design Worx® services. They reached out to help determine the most cost-effective solution to handle high amounts of stormwater that would avoid any issues with standing water.

Drains and Grates Suitable for 18 Wheelers

The NDS Design Worx team of specialists reviewed the drainage plan and requirements, as well as the storm sewer outlets to help determine the flow criteria and the appropriate solution. BG-FILCOTEN trench drains offered the right family of products to solve this problem. Once the flow rates were analyzed, NDS was able to confirm the team only needed the 8-in. channel which helped save costs by not oversizing the system.

The design firm was impressed by NDS’ expertise in identifying the right size drainage system and most appropriate solution. The BG-FILCOTEN 200 can handle a high load capacity, and is especially suitable for installation in industrial areas such as distribution centers, factories and warehouses. These channels are made from high performance concrete (HPC) and come with an integrated rail which allows it to handle higher loads, makes it easier to maintain and also less expensive than competitive products.

Due to the heavy loads of 18 wheelers and large forklifts with solid tires, the design firm needed a grate that was load E rated. NDS suggested a heavy-duty Ductile Iron grate, DIN rated EN1433, which when combined with the channel drains, is designed to stand up to 600kN.

Project Wraps up with Value Added Support

The NDS Design Worx team provided a complete system layout and offered local support to help ensure installation went well. NDS also has local inventory and distribution in the region, making it easy to ensure the product that was being specified would be readily available. It took approximately two months start to finish to complete the project and the engineering firm was extremely pleased with the final result.

"BG-FILCOTEN trench drains are fast becoming a go-to solution for heavily trafficked distribution centers and warehouses because of their ability to handle such high load capacities." - Richard G., NDS
