One Paseo with NDS DuraSlope trench drain and grate system

One Paseo is a 23.6-acre mixed-use development in Carmel Valley, San Diego. Touted as a live-work-play environment, it comprises 96,000 sq. ft. of retail outlets and restaurants, 280,000 sq. ft. of office space and more than 600 luxury apartments.

The landscape architect needed a solution that would convey sheet flow away from the parking structure and sidewalk areas, while blending in with the exterior décor. This was an upscale site that once complete, featured a number of high-end design elements, including uniquely stamped concrete walkways.

The NDS DesignWorx team helped determine the best solution for the project after calculating the amount of runoff that would need capturing. NDS DuraSlope trench drains quickly rose to the top of the list, meeting the CFS (cubic ft. per second) required. These type of trench drains offer much greater design flexibility with neutral and pre-sloped channel options and a cleaner look when compared to concrete or area drains.

UPSCALE GRATE PORTFOLIO SEALS DEAL

One Paseo with NDS drain and grate system

NDS offer a variety of decorative grates to accompany the DuraSlope trench drains that are both ADA compliant and heelproof. There are many choices in galvanized and stainless steel, and cast and ductile iron, giving the specifier several grate designs to select from.

Going for an eclectic vibe and wanting a grate that would weather nicely over time, the landscape architect was presented with multiple styles in ductile iron – including weave, tile, brick, diamond and slot patterns. All are ornate, visually appealing and heelproof, which was important for the project since these grates would be used on a pedestrian walkway.

While he found the deco slot grate fit the design aesthetic of the project the best, the specifier liked having access to a diverse selection of drains and grates that could be considered for future projects – be they utilitarian or decorative in nature.

LOCKING CHANNELS SAVE TIME, IMPROVE OUTCOME

DuraSlope comes in lightweight 4 ft. modular sections, which made it easy for the construction team to handle and install, and with product locally stocked, the project remained on track. Installation went smoothly – thanks in part due to the way the channels lock together. A special mechanism helps maintain structural integrity, saves time on placement and produces a better outcome because the channels stay aligned.

The designer was pleased with the final result and with the support provided by NDS – the team provided a high-end looking drain and grate that fit the area’s aesthetics criteria and still came in within the project’s budget.
